Southern Coleslaw

Coleslaw is a staple in arguably all southern households, and for good reason. This side dish complements almost any dinner you make and adds a nice contrast of flavors with its creamy, bright flavor. Serve with chicken, steak, or as an addition to a vegetarian spread — the possibilities are endless with where this southern coleslaw will shine.

How long can southern coleslaw last in the fridge? I recommend eating southern coleslaw as soon as you can to retain the crunch of the fresh cabbage. Over time, the coleslaw dressing will begin to wilt the shredded cabbage because of the vinegar. Store in an air-tight container and eat within 1-2 days to maintain the optimal freshness with coleslaw.

Can you add any extra vegetables to southern coleslaw? Yes, there are many ways to customize this southern coleslaw recipe by adding ingredients. Some ideas for ingredients to add are:

  • Fresh herbs such as cilantro or parsley

  • Thinly sliced peppers such as bell peppers or jalapeño

  • Shredded broccoli stems

Can coleslaw be frozen? No, coleslaw is best served freshly made and won’t thaw well if you decide to freeze it.

Which vinegar is best in southern coleslaw? Almost any type of vinegar will work in southern coleslaw, just providing subtle differences in flavor based on your choice. In my opinion, the best choice of vinegar for coleslaw is apple cider vinegar because it delivers a nice balance of acidity and sweetness. What to serve southern coleslaw with? Coleslaw can be served with almost any dish, but my favorite would be a classic roasted chicken. See this recipe for the best tips and tricks on how to create a delicious roasted chicken.
