How to cut tomatoes for salad? Tomatoes are best cut for a salad with a serrated knife, as it allows you to cut through the skin of the tomato cleanly without ripping or tearing it. I recommend cutting cherry tomatoes in half in order for the dressing to marinate and seep into the tomatoes.

Can I substitute large tomatoes for cherry tomatoes in a salad? Yes, you can substitute a large, vine ripened, heirloom, or beefsteak tomato for cherry tomatoes when making this tomato and burrata salad recipe. When making this change, I recommend cutting the tomatoes into roughy ¾ inch cubes to mimic the size of the cherry tomatoes and continue the rest of the recipe as instructed.

Can you make tomato salad in advance? I do not recommend making tomato and burrata salad in advance as the tomatoes will become mealy if stored in the refrigerator and the freshness of the herbs will deteriorate after slicing them. For best results, prepare this salad and serve right away.

How to serve burrata? I always recommend serving burrata right away and freshly chilled out of the fridge. I also advise slicing into the burrata before serving to ensure that guests can get a portion of both the outer layer of the cheese and the soft inside easily with every scoop.

Ingredients

  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 8 oz burrata
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Pinch of red chili flakes
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, torn
  • Flaky salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the cherry tomatoes in half and spread them evenly across a large platter. Set the platter aside.
  2. In a small bowl, make the vinaigrette by mixing the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and red chili flakes. Spread the dressing across the tomatoes, ensuring they each get an even amount of vinaigrette.
  3. Sprinkle the tomatoes with flaky salt and fresh cracked pepper, making sure each part of the salad gets evenly seasoned.
  4. Let the tomatoes marinate in the dressing for about 10 minutes in order for them to soak up the flavor from the vinaigrette.
  5. Place the burrata in spots between the tomatoes and slice into them so the soft insides of the cheese are easily scoopable.
  6. Tear the fresh basil and disperse it over the salad.
  7. Serve right away and enjoy!
